Job application checklist: CV, cover letter and video intro
Before you apply, run through this checklist. It takes about ten minutes and helps you avoid the most common mistakes.
1. Read the job ad closely
- Highlight the must-have skills and the closing date.
- Note exactly how the employer wants you to apply and what format they want.
2. Tailor your CV
- Put the most relevant skills and results first, using truthful wording from the ad.
- Check dates, spelling and contact details.
- Save it as a Word file or text-based PDF with a clear name.
3. Write a focused cover letter
- Address a named person if you can.
- Answer the top two or three requirements with a specific example each.
- Keep it to about one page.
4. Add a video introduction (if welcome)
- Check the employer allows or welcomes it.
- Keep it under a minute and add the link to your CV and letter.
5. Final checks
- Replace every placeholder.
- Make sure every claim is true.
- Open your files again on another device to check they look right.
- Keep a copy of what you sent, and note when to follow up.
Tools can speed up the drafting, but your final read-through is what makes the application yours.
