How to answer "tell us about yourself" in a 30-second video
This is the single most common prompt in video applications, and also the easiest one to ramble through. The trap is treating it as a request for your life story, when it's really a request for one clear thread: what you do and why it's relevant to this specific role.
Pick one thread, not three
Most people try to cover their whole career in 30 seconds and end up saying very little about any of it. Instead, pick the single most relevant thread for the role you're applying to — your current focus, a recent project, or the skill the posting emphasized most — and build the whole answer around that one thing.
A structure that works
- Who you are, in context: "I'm a [role] currently focused on [specific thing]" — not a full job title history.
- One piece of evidence: a project, result, or example that backs up that focus.
- Why this role: one sentence connecting your thread to what they're hiring for.
What to leave out
Your full education history, every previous job, and personal hobbies unrelated to the role. If it's not on the thread you picked, it's probably cutting your best material short to make room for it.
Practice it, but don't memorize it word for word
A fully memorized answer tends to sound flat because you're reciting instead of talking. Know your three beats — who, evidence, why — well enough to hit them in any order, and let the actual wording vary take to take.
