Upwork now records proposal videos — do you still need a separate tool?

4 min read

Upwork added a built-in option to record a short video directly when submitting a proposal. If you hadn't seen it yet, it's a genuinely useful addition — and it raises a fair question: if Upwork already does this, why record somewhere else first?

What Upwork's built-in recorder does well

It's right there in the proposal flow, so there's zero extra setup — no separate tab, no account, nothing to learn. For a freelancer who only ever pitches on Upwork, that convenience is real and worth using.

Where it stops being enough

Two limits show up quickly once you look past the first proposal:

What a separate tool is actually for, at this point

Not replacing Upwork's feature for Upwork proposals specifically — using it there is fine. The gap is everywhere else you pitch: a direct client email, a Fiverr gig, a LinkedIn cold message, a portfolio site. A tool built around one clean, reusable link — with your background blurred or replaced automatically — covers all of those the same way, instead of re-recording per platform and hoping the room behind you looks fine each time.

A simple way to decide

If you only ever work through Upwork, its native recorder is genuinely enough — you don't need to add a step. If you pitch across more than one platform, or record from a space you'd rather not show as-is, a link-based tool with background blur covers the gap Upwork's feature doesn't reach.

Record on Jikoreel — background blur included, one link that works anywhere you paste it, not just inside Upwork.
